Noor Tagouri:
Well, when was the first time you ever felt properly represented in media?
Salwa Tagouri:
Properly represented? I still don't feel properly represented. What are you talking about?
Noor Tagouri:
Hey. I'm Noor Tagouri, and I've been telling my entire life. I've spent the last few years examining a more personal narrative about how the misrepresentation of Muslims in media has impacted American society. I thought I knew the story, because I thought I knew my story. But the more I looked for answers, the more questions I had. So I experimented, I examined one of the most traumatic tragedies in my family's history, a news event that dominated American airwaves in April, 1986.
Khalu Mohy:
Did you hear anything? She said, "Yeah, we heard the big explosion and all the glass, the windows in the building shatter." So I said, "Then your uncles are completely vanished."
Noor Tagouri:
During the journey. Something extraordinary happened. The stories I thought I knew intimately were still alive. I learned that controlling a narrative instead of being curious about it, is exactly the dynamic I was examining to begin with. What I found was a fuller exploration of the ever evolving story of America.
Brother Ali:
I always felt like America stole me from myself, and it replaced it with a myth.
Zaheer Ali:
How did we get to the point where you are okay sitting with a story that is not your own, just because?
Noor Tagouri:
My intention with Rep is to challenge the concept of the value of representation. Our guides include experts, academics, artists, actors, names you already know. And in our conversations, we bounce around through American history and culture, and witness our present and future unfold. And then we find out how these stories affect all of us.
